Emptiness Poem by Gerald Opio

Emptiness

It didn't seem as it did,
when you left for a trip,
far to the western world,
bearing I was at first.

But as time went on,
a longing engulfed my heart,
one that needed sating,
the urge for satiation escalated.

The more I tried to surpress it,
the more I craved for you,
a profound void it created,
one that wasn't easy to elude.

But then, what would poor me do,
apart from waiting for your return,
counting days while lying on bed,
the act continued, becoming a habit,
a habit I couldn't do away with.

Forbearing was all I could do,
as I make those late night calls,
initiating long night conversations with you,
to aid subdue the emptiness I feel,
without you by my side.

Hence, time was wonderfully crafted,
forward it keeps on ticking,
tik tak tik tak tik tak....
it doesn't stop, incessantly time passes by,
evoking the long anticipated day.

Early in the morning, waking up with a grin,
surprisingly, it happens to be the day she returns,
endowed in a superzealous mood, hastily ambulating to the airport,
due to its close proximity to our home.

On arrival at the airport, looking around for a while,
my first sight on her after such a long time, so uplifting and thrilling it was,
the emptiness I felt healed expeditiously, felt whole again,
more like a reincarnation it was!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
When you love someone and you are always with them. You may grow fond of them hence sometimes finding them soporific. But when they happen to leave for a quite a while, that's when you realize how their presence matters to you. Always learn how to appreciate and get the best out of the presence of your loves, because you never know when they will happen to leave your side. Do away with pride, and get along with the people you love. They matter the most because they will always be there for you.
