Farming Poem by Douglas Alan Stromback

Farming

Rating: 4.8

the lettuce is growing
the head is spinning
Fred is unknowing
the farmer is grinning
the carrot is sprouting
the old lady is cooking
the young boy is pouting
at the chores he is overlooking
the dogs are running
the cats are climbing
the snakes are sunning
the brother's strumming and rhyming
and a car drives by
the dust does fly
this is farming
this is farming
living off a dusty road
miles from town with the frogs and toads
and greenness unbound
rising with the sun
drinking coffee that is perking
farming until harvesting is done
keeping the tractor working
wondering through the day what is for dinner
while working in the hot sun ray
and wishing all the girls in town were thinner
and the day does end
visiting with a stranger and a friend
they all gather round the table
they say their prayer thanking God they are able
at dinner they stare
the old lady is so proud
and everyone is so hungry
they are one happy crowd
it is so nice to see
dinner does end
and it's time to turn in, off goes the stranger and friend
everybody goes to bed
waiting for the new day to begin
the old lady gets up first
happy as can be
the rest at sunrise no worse
they wake up to breakfast you see
it is a new morning
and out on the ground they see frost
and at God Fred is scorning
his crop is lost
old mama is crying
brother is praying
the little boy is sighing
because for the crop nobody will be buying or paying
in a night all is lost because of frost
this is farming
no matter how much work is done
it can be lost by frost
or too much sun
this is farming
