Nothing glows; the golden door has closed;
Her harbor's baited lamp has turned away.
New rules excuse old promises opposed,
And silence sings of worlds where none can stay.
Those Stripes, once broad, once bright now tired gray;
Her honor's gleam has burnished spite from lust;
A brazen fear has banished reason's sway,
And hopes abjure the light, to beckon dust.
The Stars' ascent seems retrograde to me,
And where their spangles loom my tears cascade.
Reflections wave no deeper than need be;
For Liberty she died in a charade.
What have we done, Oh hallowed replica?
Oh where has Freedom gone, AMERICA?
