Food For Thought Poem by Ruta Mohapatra

Food For Thought

Rating: 5.0

Do the plants cry
When we break a twig
Pluck an un-ripened fruit
Prune its leaves?

Do they wince
And shed tears
Shriek painfully
In an inaudible voice?

We can't understand
What the animals say
We can't hear
What the plants say

Is there a difference
Between the two?
One silent, the other incoherent
Both victims of hungry humans

The consciousness of someone who is silently aware of pain and suffering in the world around her... a deep and charming poem that hides a lot more that what is written.
