For When The Ties Break... Poem by Dakota Ellerton

For When The Ties Break...

Through the sea of lies,
I’d still undoubtly swim to where you were drowning.
I’d pull the knife from your hands,
and grab you until you willingly collapse in my arms.
You wanted to be my knight,
and rescue me from Cobourg’s keep.
But what if I were to rescue you now?
So many times,
I’ve looked down to see my feet dangling beneath me.
But with the final thought,
I’d pull myself back up.
If in an instant the idea of you can change my life,
I know I can do the same for you.
On the nights you need me,
I promised to come.
If by foot or car,
I’d show up with arms open.
When the cruelest of realities come into plain sight,
and the simple pleasures disappear,
I plead to myself.
‘Just do it, do it now’.
As if a voice were giving me permission,
you’d always be there to counter it.
You were not ment to save me,
but I to save you.
My life dangles between my fingers,
I hold it so carelessly.
If I were to dropp something so fragile,
it’d shatter to a million pieces beyond repair.
With such shakey hands,
you come from behind me and hold me firm.
My life is in your hands, too.
I tremble and cry,
my legs are going to collapse, I’m going to dropp it.
You hold me tightly and tell me to calm down.
You whisper you love me,
and whipe the tears from my face.
How many times do I have to tell you,
not to save my life.
If any words were to break through,
they’d be yours and you know this.
You’ve got such a hold on my heart,
it’s chaotic.
Having you so close,
I can feel the pain lingering in your heart.
When I see the tears in your eyes,
it makes me just as sad.
Miles away,
do you feel the rope at my throat?
I feel the blade on your arm.
