Forgetting The Perfect House Poem by Paula Glynn

Forgetting The Perfect House

The newly married couple
Buy the perfect house:
It is in a prime location
It is a four bedroom house
And isn't in a flood area

The neighbours are pleasant
And talk in a friendly tone
The neighbours are welcoming
And nicely enquire
About the married couple

The married couple previously
Lived in a two-bedroom apartment:
An apartment that was too small
Especially with the husband
Being rather tall

Even though the apartment was cosy
It didn't suit their needs
It was cramped and sometimes dusty
Always needed to be aired out
And mould continually removed

So the married couple
Purchased a suburban house
With a busy highstreet nearby
With shops and other amenities
Including a public library and a cosy cafe

At first the new house was spotless
But then real life got in the way
The married couple had to go to work
They had so many bills to pay:
Bills that arrived like clockwork

So the blue carpet wasn't perfectly clean
The bins were not always taken out
But the washing up was done regularly
The laundry washed once a week
Yet still the house became undone

So the married couple hired a cleaner:
Their jobs meant they could afford one
And soon the house became shipshape
They had a clear floor again
And a clear sink every day

They soon realised
They had to forget the perfect house
Their apartment had been easier to clean
But now they live in a home
Where they keep heart and soul.
