Four Seasons Of Absence Poem by Rory Hudson

Four Seasons Of Absence

Rating: 5.0

I thought I might have seen you again
in spring, in places where we lay among the flowers,
young and careless of the passing hours
that left us sighing and to yearn in vain.

And I thought I might have seen you again
in summer, by the river which would run before our feet
under trees that seemed to keep us sheltered from the heat
that used to wither all the ripening grain.

And I thought I might have seen you again
in autumn, as the leaves fell in the evening breeze
upon our skin with sweet, delightful ease
while the full moon had not yet begun to wane.

And I thought I might have seen you again
in winter, where we sheltered from the cold
by rosy glow of firesides, till they grew old
and turned to ashes under chilling rain.

Four seasons now have come and gone -
I think there will not be another spring
in which we might again be gathering
the colours of the year for this our song.

Through dusty windows now I gaze
in hope of finding that which will not be;
yet in fear also that I may one day see
your face appearing through the darkening haze,

sad with new knowledge of the ways of time,
beckoning me to come with you and know
the reasons why these things cannot be so
and why your life and mine will never rhyme.

Authentic and poetically rendered sadness and dawning realisation. A very fine example of your craftmanship. jim

THIS, to me, is the most beautiful one I've read of yours and believe it to be your absolute best! ....'as the leaves fell in the evening breeze upon our skin with sweet, delightful ease'... The above is a beautiful beautiful turn of phrase, Rory. ..'.in which we might again be gathering the colours of the year for this our song' Oh, I love the way you put these words together...I only WISH I could think like this, Rory. Just a delight to read...like eating a sumptious desert. The last two stanzas conclude your beautiful poem with such a sweet, sad perfection, ending with that last sad line of finality... ....'why your life and mine can never rhyme.' You MUST have been very pleased when you read this after you had completed it. I would have been ecstatic if I could have created something as good. Bravo, Rory!
