Freedom of speech is often conflated
With liberally using the 'F' word
Or when people are able to blaspheme.
However, if one deploys it wisely,
To question prevailing orthodoxies,
Then one soon notices censorship by
Omission or by widespread editing.
Consequently, unfettered 'freedom' of speech
Is clearly a myth. Hate speech should never
Be condoned. Yet when we feel free to speak
Our mind, on important issues like war,
Oppression, or social injustice, or
Whistle blowers' unlawful detentions,
We often decline the offer it seems.
For some reason, we fear real freedom that
Could make things change. It's very curious.
