Written in the Night of New Year's Eve
- Gao Shih (701-765)
- Translated by Frank C Yue
Alone, I am sleepless in a tavern lamp's cold light.
Such sadness in traveller's heart, what issues can incite?
Tonight, m'folks at home faraway think of their son dear;
Tomorrow, m'gray temple hair will be older one year.

Written in the Night of New Year's Eve
Gao Shih (701-765)
In the cold of the tavern lamplight, unslept, alone am I;
This heart of mine, in sojourn, turned sad, O why? I sigh.
Tonight, O I wish I were home, yet a thousand miles away;
Come tomorrow, my hair grayed, another year's gone by!
