Goddess Poem by Susan Vannatta

Goddess

“Breathe me into you, ” I whisper
as you sleep, wishing silently
that you would hold me close.
I see you smile as you dream,
but it is not me running
through your mind. Why can’t
i be her? The girl you dream of,
the one who has the same face,
the same hands, the same hair
as me, but she is not me.
Why can’t i be everything
you ever wanted, all the things
you wish i were. i want
nothing more than to make you
happier than this, make you smile,
as you smile now.
But it is not me that brings
that lighted smile, it is
everything i could have been.
She is me plus perfection
in your eyes. You could have had
her, if only i were better,
but instead you have to settle
with me as me, left to
only dream of your Goddess, who i
can never achieve to be
