Gretel's Reminiscence (Final Version And Reformatted Stanzas)

once there were clouds like flowers.
people held onto their hearts
with kite strings.
when they went floating up-

they held festivals for hours-
spooning out the thick cream
of afternoons

and we walked among them,
penny-splendid,
breaking off sugar-candy;

above us, the soft clouds massed:
continents of rose-
