Guests And The Hosts [from 'proverbs 400' In Tamil] Poem by Rajendran Muthiah

Guests And The Hosts [from 'proverbs 400' In Tamil]

337. The affluents shouldn't be guests of those in want
or else the hosts would treat beyond their limits.
The grief caused is akin to that when the thigh
of a swallow is cut, its bowels slip down.

338. If you don't meet the needs of the guest with clothes,
medicine, shelter and food with sweet words,
it is killing a buffalo for the lunch
but miserly in buying the spices.

339. Masquerading differently isn't penance.
Throw the spears or smear with cool sandal paste.
As the stud fixed in the middle of the yoke,
A just involved mind with peace is penance.

340. When one gives something to your safe custody
You ought to give it back when one requires.
Don't make delay to return it. Wherever
You hide the meat, its smell betrays it.

341. O, chief of a vast land with sky-reaching hills!
Supporting each other is good. To avoid
the danger of snakes, a mother gave a crab
to her son. Every little thing has some use.

342. When hunger kills an ascetic who ought to
rid of his intense desire, eats the meat,
it likens one swimming across the sea, sinks
into the pool of water of a calf's feet.

343. Show mercy to all and let them reach heaven.
Don't sacrifice the heaven seeking lives.
Killing a life, eating its flesh and worshipping
its blood is like changing curd into other food.

344. O, chief of the waves embracing coast! If one,
gives a measure of rice, pray for one's strength
the whole day. That's the nature of persons.
Doing business world o'er to gain is the same.
