Hathras Gang Rape - Give Justice To The Mother Who Will Forever Weep Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Hathras Gang Rape - Give Justice To The Mother Who Will Forever Weep

Men decide to amuse themselves
they pick up an innocent Dalit girl to have their fun;
she was not born to yield pleasure to them,
she was not a street girl or a gypsy just wandering about
or waiting for men to come and take her away
on the hills or in the fields to quell their lust.

She was a daughter, a sister, a grown up teenage girl,
full of zest and innocence which every girl of her age holds
as they walk around thinking the world
is one safe place to live in and breathe.

Her mother must have shared so many small dreams with her
and in their little eyes must have been so many simple expectations
like early wedding bells, a saree red
and mehndi on her young daughter's hands and feet on her special day.

But that remained an illusion in her mind
as one daylight changed her entire existence
when her teenage daughter was dragged in the fields
and raped by four men until she could not cry
as fractured and wounded she was left there to die.

Mercy was in abeyance as the four men acted worse than beasts,
though they had used and abused a helpless teenage girl
they had abandoned her with fatal injuries
and with a deep gash on her tongue
so that she could tell no one nothing.

And when she died in a hospital,
that night she was cremated without the final rites
without the presence of her parents and relatives
which made every heart to feel a pain so boundless
that as days will pass, everyone will share this agony,
they will shout aloud asking for justice for that daughter
who died so implacably, so pitilessly.

And as years will pass, the episode will be another story
but a mother's eyes alone will silently weep
waiting for justice which will either take decades to achieve
or many hardships to pursue it,
while her teenage girl who has died after being gang-raped
will be another silent star in the dark skies of our memory.
