He Looked So Strange, A Urdu Ghazal By Ibrahim Ashk In English Translation Poem by Ravi Kopra

He Looked So Strange, A Urdu Ghazal By Ibrahim Ashk In English Translation

He looked so strange, I should have thought about him more
His meeting was so strange, I had wanted something more

His face did no show what was on his mind
His silence was strange, his speech even more

Every few seconds he would change the topic
strange was he while here, on leaving even more

You will be mistaken if you think you know him
as a stranger he is different, as a friend even more

Don't know if I should accept him or send him away
hard if I lose him, accepting him even more

An enemy, a confidant, a stranger, he is all in one
'Ashk' thought he was different, but turned out to be even more

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
the original ghazal in Urdu

dekha to koi aur tha socha to koi aur

dekhā to koī aur thā sochā to koī aur
jab aa ke milā aur thā chāhā to koī aur

us shaḳhs ke chehre meñ ka.ī rañg chhupe the
chup thā to koī aur thā bolā to koī aur

do-chār qadam par hī badalte hue dekhā
Thahrā to koī aur thā guzrā to koī aur

tum jaan ke bhī us ko na pahchān sakoge
anjāne meñ vo aur hai jaanā to koī aur

uljhan meñ huuñ kho duuñ ki use pā luuñ karūñ kyā
khone pe vo kuchh aur hai paayā to koī aur

dushman bhī hai hamrāz bhī anjān bhī hai vo
kyā 'ashk' ne samjhā use vo thā to koī aur
