He Watches Over You - Poem by Philip Hoom
you are not abandoned by
the strains of a dead relationship, although
you have fine-tuned your psyche, he
has clung to those remnants of past.
a new hairstyle, a new flat on the new second-hand car,
and you have swept the ashes and
cleared your conscience;
poised for new adventures.
he has not displayed the same level of dexterity. he
has not made those mental adjustments. staring
down sitcom hell, never
comfortable in his own skin.
he watches over you. he
covets what is removed from him. til
death, you said. he intends
to make you realise what that really means.
