Heartbreaking Poem by Bill Galvin

Heartbreaking

Heartbreaking…
it is the emotion I feel
when I see the anguish of helplessness
on your once so warmly welcoming face;
when I wipe the tears of despair
often running
from your once so bright and beautiful eyes;
when I hear the whimpers and sobs of discomfort
from your once so agile and athletic body;
when I feel the pain of imprisonment
on your now silenced and speechless lips.
I want there to be a button to push
that comforts you
without losing you to a medicated retreat;
a salve that soothes you;
a word that conveys that things will be better
and not be a lie.
Such is the frustration of caring for a loved one
who doesn't deserve an end
such as this demon ALS brings.
