Highway 1979 revisited
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
I was reminded "of the time Jane Austen took a turn around the fountain"
Which was when I, with my family, climbed the little mountain, Mango Lake Hill,
I had an adorable bairn, my toddler child
And I was fain that I had male swains
And that I was a little vain about my engineering skills;

I was a girl from the Indian South
Who after an almost two year stint in the South Western desert
Became a girl of the Northern city lights
Where the winters when mild, are delightful
And the spring and the summers are glorious
And the autumn is colourful;

There have been many who have touched my heart romantically
But I must confess that my husband is a true love of mine
Which brings me to my story:
Mama's in the kitchen making some food
Dad's in the construction site overseeing projects
My older brother is driving the car
Making a dangerous U-Turn and winning the race
My older sister is giving the school secretary's speech
And saying, "Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights"
And I am in the living room
Acing my math tests and saying, I have a dream, a song to sing, to help me cope with anything,
And together, we were the Seetharam family having the happiness highs and lows.
