His Parting Shot Poem by Bryan Taplits

His Parting Shot

Your not loving me excites-and is a challenge-
like an ocean surging towards a dike,
But I just thought this out-
and my conclusion's without doubt-
I don't love you less…. Greater is my dislike!
I once wondered and wandered in search of an Idyllic You
And eventually we did meet
(which is something I wish not to repeat)
And it was then that I recognized…you really are no prize-
And that even those with whom I had battled were more true.
I admit, I've slumbered and wasted my slim life-
So now I tend to hoist more than a few,
Trying to forget every strife of my sodden, fly-speck of a life
Where my most productive effort
-which still gives me some comfort-
Was that the wife I had never married… Was You!
Sure, you may chortle and say 'Sour Grapes' and add 'You know to my breast you made haste! '
But this you'll never know
-cause I've never told you so. I deliberately jogged rather than ran-during that hallucinatory chase.
