Hope Is
Four little letters, and yet
thousands, perhaps trillions, of definitions.
It lies, like air in the sky, at the center
of each dream, consideration and smile given.
It is the longing, loving and living for the more,
that can only be fully realized, not alone.
Like yeast in the best bread
it forms, rises and gives more than it is.
It's bound up in every bit of bliss
a soul is ever blessed to partake of.
It's the rope thrown to a heart drowning
in the deep, dark lake of suffering.
It's the fire that burns dreams into life
through the darkness of long, lonely nights.
It is the petals of glory growing on wild flowers,
always there, seen or unseen.
It is the buzz of our best thoughts moving through us
like a breeze in the wake of angels wings.
It is the sun rising, the wind blowing,
the rain falling, the crops growing.
It is us, them, me and you,
those that were, those yet coming;
all, on our way passing through.
It is the blessing in the best of everything
we've ever seen, heard, tasted, shared or been given.
And, it is the truest, clearest picture of God
we've ever seen.
Who can truly define it? Who could ever really not feel it,
at least once?
It simply happens, as things do... for after all,
it is, every moment, every day, every life.

Smoky, I read this poem with interest as I've written one with the same title, as this is a theme many of us versifiers have taken up. What stands out to me is the simile " yeast" —it makes me think I'll take up this theme again. Yes, like yeast, like a catalyst that underlies so much that is positive. -Glen
