How Could I Have Been So Wrong Poem by Dorothy (Alves) Holmes

How Could I Have Been So Wrong

Was it the song or
The full moon?
Maybe because it was May and
Garden's were coming to life.
Perhaps the crocus or new spring grass.
Somehow, I thought it all would last.

How could I have been so wrong?

Remember how we talked into the early
Morning, making promises to last forever,
Promising never to abandon our dreams,
Seems we forgot a lot of what was said,
Made hard beds, now empty of each other.
My heart yearns and cries, remembering
Days, months, years that lie ahead\Without you by my side..

How Could I have been so wrong?

I toss your photograph in the fire,
Backing away from the blaze, losing you
In the haze of that promised forever,
No longer viable!
