They that know to laugh, laugh;
They that know not to laugh,
But can make others laugh,
Merrily make them laugh.
But he of wits one half
That knows neither to laugh,
Nor can make others laugh,
Just talks about the stuff
Such laughter is made of,
A calf rather callow,
His humour sense shallow,
He talks on humour-stuff!

Human laughter is liberation from the sense of ego (in Sanskrit called aham) . The true spirituality of a man is reflected in the sense of humour he has. A man too serous minded giving an appearance of being of profound nature is in reality shallow and often lame. He, who sounds too profound and heavily wise, builds a fence in his life preventing joy and bliss entering it.His life is like a desert. A truly religious man is weightless light. His smile is that of an innocent child. Such humour and laughter seems the soul of dharma and spirituality. Such a man can laugh on himself. His humour won't hurt anyone, but is directed at the whole mankind at its idiosyncrasies and peculiarities. As Shankaracharya said: chidānanda rūpam shivo'ham shivo'ham| Human soul is of the nature of joy and bliss.
