Ray Katherine

I Am - Poem by Ray Katherine

I cry out
for a hand
to hold
at times like these
but there is no hand
to comfort me
or my child
as he cries
from a hungry belly
when I have to stay awake
at night in the shelter
and watch him
I make a list of
everything I have
the list is empty
see?
so instead I make
a list of everything that I am:
I am hungry
cold
tired
homless
illiterate< br>poor
broken
addicted
shaken
scarre d
uneducate
sick
and sick
and I am dead
dead to all of you
in so many more
ways
than
one
