I Am A Girl Poem by Monti Chaudhury

I Am A Girl

Rating: 5.0

I AM A GIRL
‘ I am a fetus! '
Resting in my mum's womb,
Like an unbloomed lotus.
She thinks of me every moment,
She enjoys my little kicks,
And smiles on hearing my heartbeats.
Drops of tear roll down her cheeks
When she counts the days and weeks.
She puts her footsteps carefully,
And waits for me patiently.
She weaves hopes in her world of dreams,
No regrets for her tight jeans.
My dad brings toys and cradle for me
My granny's knitting mittens forgetting all the pain in her knee.
My mom and dad discuss my name,
While staring at the empty photo frame.
My mom listens to soothing music
When I sleep in peace.
She reads bed time stories
And hums sweet lullabies.

Now the day has come
When I am born.
‘I am a girl! '
‘My little princess' - calls my mom.
‘I am a girl! '
Resting on my mum's lap,
Shining like a pearl.
I wonder to see her glistening face,
When I open my eyes.
I find she is very happy
Though worried from inside.
People come and greet her,
Bestow their blessings and hails.
They also say she is a daughter
Made for someone else.
She blissfully accepts all their regards.
But I find her occupied
With lots of negative thoughts,
When she remembers the mortal devils and frauds.
In her trembling voice
She whispers in my ear - -
The place is not safe my dear.
I put my tiny hand on her lovely palm,
And promise to protect myself
From the folks who harm.
I tell her not to cry
Or be worried for me.
So what if I am a girl
I too have a right to live
With my head held high,
At par with boys and nothing to be deprived.
I affirm her with my shiny eyes
To take care of myself - -
" Nobody can touch me without my consent"
I promise to shatter all her fears,
And wipe away her tears.
I promise to accomplish all her hopes,
Which she wove in her dreams.
I promise you be responsible
As ‘ I am proud to be a girl! '
