I Love Money Poem by Paula Glynn

I Love Money

I just love that green piece of paper,
That can buy you anything and everything,
It gives you power: a hold over people,
It makes people desperate,
It gets them out of bed in the morning,
And keeps the tills chinking.
It makes people smile with happiness,
While lack of it leaves some cold,
In the gutter, it leaves you wanting more,
It makes you want time to go faster,
So that you can leave your office job,
And retire on a beach in sunny California,
Your friends & family left behind,
With drudgery and routine.
And it makes people envious and competitive,
Lack of it leaves some on the street,
Whereas on the other end of the spectrum,
People are waltzing in dazzling light,
Celebrating their winnings,
Or just boasting of their life of privilege.
What one has, what the other lacks,
This reality, hard as that can be to accept,
But money can buy you any material,
It can buy you a rockstar boyfriend,
And a supermodel or actress as a best friend,
It challenges you to reach to the top,
And drink champagne with the bad boys,
While a hookah wanders the streets,
Looking for their next payday.
And shoplifters want things for free,
The price of the modern lifestyle worth the risk,
While many praise the royal family,
Knowing their riches aren't for sale,
And classrooms fill with students,
All itching to leave but needing to learn,
And find their trade in adult life,
As they pump money into teenage magazines,
And fad boybands of the moment.
And all this happens everyday,
No rest for the wicked, as they say,
And I love money,
In spite of what it can make people do,
The world spinning in orbit,
Carrying people on a mission to sustain life,
And end up bloody rich.
