I Was - Poem by Siphokazi Zele
In the beginning
was the Source of life,
life that brought light to humanity.
which I now am part of.
Before sun rose
right behind that mountain hill
Before earth was born
Before oceans could flow
Even before nature could adorn
I know you
I know of a time
when we laughed to joyous moments fulfil
when we watched spoken word become real
when painful moments we never knew
when those astounding moments we ceased.
We only strangers by physicality
Does anyone dare to consider the possibility
that we share the same identity?
You are my mother, father
but by no means are you a stranger.
We were received by the ground we honour with our presence
By the shining stars
By the water that is life
Us holding the solution
of a world that has come to destruction
Us the vessels
of a great magnificent love
