Introduction A La Poesie. (Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

Introduction A La Poesie. (Translation) .

Rating: 5.0

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poem is about a teacher trying to teach a class how to read and interpret poem, like holding it up to the light like a colour slide, or waterskiing across the poem's surface-enjoy it. But the students are too narrow-minded to do this: they prefer to treat the poem roughly, on their own terms. These students are ignorant, and I taught similar high school pupils myself. Having said that, I found other poetry students very receptive to new ideas and open-minded, a pleasure to teach.

Thanks for your comment from a fellow teacher, who knows what teaching poetry is like. I appreciate that you notice that I take great care and trouble with translation, giving every word its due. Billy Collins deserves most of the credit.

You are so right-the majority of poetry students were creative, free spirits like me or you. Billy Collins has really stimulated some ideas in this poem.
