It's Autumn Poem by Smoky Hoss

It's Autumn

Rating: 5.0

As I drive slowly
the switchbacks and hairpin turns
of this narrow road
winding down a glorious Arizona mountain,
route unfamiliar… duration unknown,
I watch the gold fallen leaves
blowing across the path
laid out in front of me
they seem so sublime, and yet…
so melancholy,
beautifully carefree in the awareness
that time is fading into winter.
The sun is giving such incredible glory
to the moment of this season,
that I swear
I can see a million miles away,
the air so clear, sweet and pure,
that I swear
I can smell the scent of finality
blending with eternity.
-The leaves and I roll along,
together basking in the grace
of this scene that feels like
a part of forever.
In the fall of life
we more clearly recognize
winter on the far horizon, and yet,
we are becoming more cognizant of
of the real destination
beyond even that.
A destination of far greater significance,
a destination where
leaves and lives and loves
don't fall… don't die.
The leaves and I continue
moving along our way, finding
more hope as we get closer,
watching more keenly, more joyfully,
for the sign
we somehow know we are bound to see:
"Welcome Home
All you wayward travelers".
