POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Alan Seeger was born and raised in New York, went to Harvard. Seeger traveled to Paris, France in 1912, where he felt at home. When war broke out in 1914, he enlisted in the French army, and was soon fighting in the front lines against the Germans. He did not regret at all his decision to enlist. Alan Seeger wrote this poem just three days before his death in combat.
