Kalamata 2023 Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Kalamata 2023

Rating: 5.0

Capsized.
Yet again.

A fishing boat with small,
seven hundred and fifty
children, women and men
from little-known places in Libya
paid huge sums of money
to unknown human traffickers
to cross the Mediterranean
and reach the shores of
the land of promises, Utopia.

succumbing to
unabashed greed.
the lotus eaters.

just a hundred rescued,
how many have lost their lives?
of them, how many children?
how many mothers?
Who knows? Who cares!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The Libyan Civil War and the exodus of Libyan Arab-Berber refugees to Europe to escape Persecution by the religious majority and a government controlled by them, are things of past. The present day Libyans who " flee" to Europe do so in search of greener pastures and treated as illegal immigrants.

Also while in UK last year I have seen many Refugees from Ukraine coming to UK escaping war/ causalities of war in Plymouth and other parts of UK, It is no good sight, still I feel bad for one reason Why politicians instigate other Politicians to remain engage in WAR on false promises.

Few days back I was watching a movie called 'The Swimmers' on the life of Yusra Mardini, I recommend you this movie, it has truly captured the near-death experience to two-time IOC Refugee Olympic Team athlete. It says it all.

You have emphasized the plight of immigrants and their distressing circumstances. They struggle to survive in their homeland, and when attempting to migrate to other countries, it's uncertain how many will make it through. Yet they try.5****

How can we make human life our currency? If only we could make that our core value.

Human life, has lost its value as a currency.. it is worthless today

Meanwhile in America we think we can hold ourselves aloof. We think we are distant from Old World problems. We stoke fires of domestic factionalism until we can't see what is going on in the world.

Everyone needs to understand that the world is a single unit now. Nobody can stay immune to what happens elsewhere.
