Last Night Poem by PAR Nair

In the silence of night..did we rediscover each other?
I sat on the kitchen table, and he on a chair
He was close enough, and rested my feet on his lap
Fondly running his hand on my foot he said
You have changed a lot from what I saw you
15 years back!
I was smiling, was it at him or at the mischief I was at?
or was just the wine that he got on my behest
I slowly moved my big toe…and rested my feet on his shoulder
The saree moved and revealed my hairy limbs
I was surprised, he didn’t move
He just looked at me and asked, Isn’t it great that
Our paths met, we lived and have a family?
I said yes, but do you love me?
I trembled as he got up swiftly
And put me down on the ground from the table top.
He asked me, if it was not love
Then why would we be together
For so long?
I didn’t dare contradict,
But, thoughts lingered around…
It’s family, parenting, society and living in it
That I did so many years
Rarely together…
Later, together we lay,
He had this unsolved puzzle
Why do you have your eyes closed?
I could hear myself shouting
the untold answer
because, I have some treasures
Enclosed….
In the morning, I look at him
I know you, I know what you want
There is nothing that I haven’t discovered about you…
You have a wife, a mother for your children
But you really need to rediscover
The woman…..
