For a time in the 1990s, Leonard Cohen, who was raised Jewish, lived in a Buddhist monastery high up Mt. Baldy outside Los Angeles. He remained a Buddhist even after he left the monastery in 1999.
To be a monk, he shaved his head and wore white robes; he slept in the corner of a cabin and decided, 'It's dismal here'. He was lovesick too. Allen Ginsberg was another Jewish poet who became a Buddhist.
