★ Leave Cambridge Again

☆ Poetry by Xu Zhimo (1897-1931, China)
☆ Translation by Luo Zhihai (1954-, China)

Lightly I go
As lightly as I came
I lightly wave
Say goodbye to the rosy clouds of west away

The golden willow by the riverside
In the setting sun, it’s the bride
The beautiful reflection on the shimmering waves,
Ripples in the heart of mine

On the sludge the waterweeds
Swagger under the water oilily
In the gentle waves of Cambridge
I would be a water plant willingly!

That pool under the shade of elm trees
No clear spring
Mixing the scum, the crumbled rainbow is
Sediment of a rainbow like dream

Seeking a dream? Push a long pole
To where the more verdant grass, casually go
A boat loads full of starlight
Sing aloud in the splendor of light

But I can not sing
Quietness is my farewell music
Even summer insects keep silence for me
Silence is tonight’s Cambridge!

Quietly I take my leave
As quietly as I came
I swing my sleeves
Do not take a cloud with me
