The sand coloured shard of pottery
Sat uneasily on the windowsill
After 2000 years of laying on the
Ground in the Cypriot sun at Salamis
It now gathered dust in the bedroom.
It had once graced the kitchen of a
Cypriot home when Saint Paul visited
That city. Now a knickknack next to
The photos and other ornaments
Waiting for a decision.
It had lain undisturbed for all time,
From the dawn of Christianity; from
When the Romans invaded Britain.
It was there when Vikings roamed.
It lay undisturbed during the heat of the
Crusades.
Inert now its only function was to
Gather dust and be wiped by the
Duster. Is this the end of its long
Journey into history or will time
Give it another journey.
Making use of things unuseful is very satisfying. Or leaving things untouched. Also, I'm so tired of people disturbing things for no reason. leave it alone. Or killing a bug for no reason. leave it alone. Insightful poem.
Big question at the end of the poem. Time will tell. Whatever is new today will become archieval object tomorrow. Nice poen, I like the historical and religious allussions. Thank you
Old shard of pottery gets a new life in this poem. Its destiny is in the eyes of the observer. Thank you.
