Mahabharata 25: Sharper Cuts Soft Than Harsh Ever Can Poem by Aniruddha Pathak

Mahabharata 25: Sharper Cuts Soft Than Harsh Ever Can

Rating: 5.0

The soft slowly cuts through the harsh
As it does the mild well as marsh,
Naught seems yon a soft-hearted man,
Faster cuts soft than harsh ever can.

Here is the transliteration of the original verse:

mŗdunā dāruņam hantimŗdunā hanti a-dāruņam |
na a-sādhyam mŗdunā kimchit tasmāt tīvra-taram mŗdu || vana 28-31

Indeed, ‘Naught seems yon a soft-hearted man'. We know: river water in course of time cuts thru a huge chunk of stone on its way into sandy grains. Yet alas, in this dog-eat-dog, rat-race competitive world of today, man has no time for this soft approach.

An astute observation on people's behavior. Incisive and insightful write. I think the bottom line of this dog-eat -dog competitive world of today is greediness. Man has reached the heights of grabbing everything as fast as he can..Accumulation of wealth is the main agenda.

This poem says much about the power of slow progress as you have rightly stated that river water in course of time cuts thru a huge chunk of stone on its way into sandy grains. I found your wise use of idiomatic words.. dog-eat-dog, and rat-race. Thank you dear Pathak sir.10
