Man Alone. Poem by Michael Walker

Man Alone.

Rating: 5.0

New Zealand's best novel is, I think, John Mulgan's 'Man Alone'
which still speaks to us, as there are many rugged types around
like Johnson, the hero, a 1930s itinerant farm worker & survivor.
I taught the novel long ago but I have never lost the plot.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is the original poem as published in 'Valley Micropress', Wellington. The original is better than the longer poem I made of it. 'First thought best thought', which Allen Ginsberg went by, is very often true, but not always.
John Mulgan (1911-1945)was a New Zealand student who went to Merton College, Oxford, and fought with the British in World War II, in Egypt and Greece. Near the end of the war, back in Cairo, John Mulgan committed suicide.

Thanks for your astute perception. ' Losing the plot can also mean, metaphorically, to make mistakes, to go wrong.

Wishing you A Very Happy New Year 2019. Thanks for sharing your impressions about John Mulgan and his novel 'Man Alone'. In one of your earlier poems too you have put across the gist of the novel's plot. I can say it with confidence that some books become a part of our life. Thanks for sharing this piece of work about 'Man Alone' and its author.
