Mhadei River - Our Goddess Of Water (Mhadei Water Dispute In Goa) Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Mhadei River - Our Goddess Of Water (Mhadei Water Dispute In Goa)

Mhadei our heritage for centuries
Mhadei our river from eternity
Mhadei our lifeline and perpetuity;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei our river of infinity
Mhadei has been here all our generations
Mhadei has helped them cultivate their fields;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei has never let us down
Mhadei has never ever made us thirst
Mhadei still gives us water to drink and refresh;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei our river of love
Mhadei has been our un-interrupted water source
Mhadei has given us water to survive;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei has been our lifeline
Mhadei has found its way through all our brooks and banks
Mhadei has kept our fields green along our homes and highways;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei has never let our fields go dry
Mhadei has always refreshed our nature and environment
Mhadei has always enhanced the prosperity of our land;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei has been our benefactor since ages
Mhadei has been our source of water supply
Mhadei has been our source of irrigation;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei has supported our cultivation of crops and pulses
Mhadei has supported our agriculture and orchards
Mhadei has been our water resource;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei has been the grace we enjoy
Mhadei has been with us in our yesteryears of time,
Mhadei must be with us in our tomorrows and forever;
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei has been here for years
Mhadei has been our goddess of water
Mhadei has quenched our thirst perennially;
so raise your voice today.

If the water from the tributaries of Mhadei is diverted,
how will our children grow healthily,
how will they walk to school without water to drink,
how will they quench their thirst after they perspire?
so raise your voice today.

If Mhadei will stop to flow in our land,
how will our soil hold the seeds we sow
how will the farmers reap the harvests they grow
how will our waterfall come gushing down like fountain of milk?
so raise your voice today.

And before our own riverbeds start to shrink,
before the productivity of our land turns barren,
before the fishes in our rivers start to flutter,
before our flora and fauna starts to dwindle;
raise your voice today.

Let our age old river Mhadei flow with gentleness
thro' our cities and villages,
thro' our fields and riverbeds
thro' our ancestral canals and tributaries;
so raise your voice today.

Let your voice be heard far and wide
let the mountains and hills echo it aloud
let our rivers always be full
let our Dudhsagar Waterfall never trickle
let our providence never be jeopardized;
so raise your voice today.

And if they will deprive us of water from Mhadei River,
how will our children will have water
to wash and clean themselves?
How will our women have water to cook and bathe?
How will our men forgive themselves
if they cannot provide for their families
the bare necessity called water along with their food?
so raise your voice today.

If they will stop the water from Mhadei to our Goa,
how will our successors forgive us
if we give up our legacy called Mhadei River
which has supported the existence
of our ancestors from stone age
and it must support our future generations?
so raise your voice today.

Mhadei River - Our Goddess Of Water (Mhadei Water Dispute In Goa)
POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
While Goa is struggling to cope with the rising Coronavirus cases and deaths, in neighbouring Karnataka the River Mhadei that flows to Goa appears to have been diverted during the lockdown, which would be a matter of contempt of the directions of the Supreme Court of India and the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal. The river that Goans call the Mandovi or Maai Mhadei, and is said to be the lifeline of Goa has already changed its course and is now flowing towards the Malprabha basin. Herald saw this first hand, when the canal flowing towards Goa is relatively dry despite the heavy rains. As a result stagnant water can be seen at many places in the canal which leads to Goa. What can be seen are rocks, sand and mud blocking the natural flow of water.
