Mister Average Poem by Paul Butters

Mister Average

We fight for the rights of ethnic minorities,
And champion equality for women
Like shining white knights.
Both children and animals
We guard as best we can.
The very bright we nurture,
Educate, in spires of learning;
The least endowed we give them
Special help.
With widening arms we fully embrace
All religions, colours, creeds.
All gays and lesbians
All quirks of humankind.
All Very Good.
No quibble there.
But what about Mister Average?
Mister "Mean" indeed.
("Mean temperature" springs to mind) .
Or more to the point,
"Mister Just Above The Mean".
Just taken for granted.
