Modern Man: The Corporation Poem by Daniel Partlow

Modern Man: The Corporation

Corporate Externalities
Are Societal Realities
Producing abundant 'Goods'
But great 'Bads' and Banalities.
Mounting Virtue Casualties.

Toxic Effluent Spewing
Affluent Greed Brewing.
Marketing Secular Iniquity
And Holy Truth Eschewing.
Dark Indebtedness Accruing.

Serpentine and clever
Pressing advantages with lever
Thy trusts mal-entrusted
When good intent did sever
By thy lobbyists endeavor

Who gives thee exaltation?
Consider well thy reputation.
Listen Modern Man
Thy name is Corporation
Complete is thy Indoctrination.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Somewhere along the line, Man became the businessman, the trader, the wheeler-dealer. If you are trying to profit from another person's ignorance and limited resources then you become like the despised Ferengi of Star Trek infamy. They have rules of acquisition and exploitation. Conscience is eroded and pulverised by the dominant force of greed. Greed has no mercy, no lovingkindness. It can, however, be as slippery as a snake trying to escape the truth of its own guilt and shame. If there were no laws and no jails and no comebacks or setbacks then God help the human race from the graceless world of wicked and wily men who roam the corridors of power seeking new victims, new blood, new souls to plunder. The story of Scrooge comes to mind. He repented of his averice and his cruel nature. What a beautiful transformation there was when he recovered the smile of a righteous and God-fearing man. He could walk the streets with his head held high. He could shake hands warmly and make friends instead of enemies. Surely this is the path to wisdom, to possess a good name and to have the genuine respect of friends and relatives and those who meet you for the very first time. What can the businessman offer but immediate mistrust? Respect has to be earned, yet to be loved by God is the greatest respect of all. What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and yet lose his eternal soul? When Jesus was offered the world by the Devil, Jesus refused to give homage to the Evil One who was a liar and a murderer from the beginning. Why be a rich man if evil is everywhere around you and you are smothered by its stench? Do not despise the poor man... he may be richer than you can ever imagine... especially if his faith is in Jesus Christ and he is thankful for everything God has given and forgiven. The modern man is just the modern demon by another name. Does he care about the sick or the starving? Does he care about spiritual principles? Alas, no. He is too busy counting his money... yet it is fool's gold in comparison with what God calls the gift of eternal life...
