Ode To Victor Hugo-77 the Miserable- Fantine's Strange Upheaval

By Freeyad Ibrahim

Fantine too had undergone a strange upheaval
Witnessed a conflict between two men
Who held her liberty in their hands;
One speaking with the voice of a Demon
The other in the tones of an Angel
The rescuing angel was the man she abhorred
Abominable Mayor, the author of her troubles
Outrageously she insulted him
This turned to be her rescuing Angel
Accordingly, she had to change her very heart
Listened in turmoil…
Gazed with distracted eyes
The knot of hatred dissolved within her
Overwhelmed by
Heart-warming and inexpressible feeling
A sense of deliverance appealed to her
Her virtuous character and chastity
It has all been as you say
Was more she could bear
Gazed mutely
Uttered little whimpering cries
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Her legs gave way beneath her
Fell on her knees
Pressing the angel's hand to her lips,
She fainted!
