Ode To Victor Hugo-84 'the Miserable'- Elegant Idler

Elegant Idler

by Freeyad Ibrahim

Warmly Clad
He was exercising his wit at the expense of Fantine
Prowling to- and -fro outside a café
stepping on the road, high and low
The gentleman was smoking, being highly fashionable
Fantine sad and garish, was coming and going
Through the snow
The gentleman scooped up a handful of snow
And thrusted it down her back
unreasonable, hard, stupid show
She uttered a cry and sprang at him like a tigress
Ripping his face with her fingernails
She gave him a kick, a punch then a blow
A circle of laughing, hooting spectators
formed round this whirlwind, friend and foe
Suddenly a tall man broke through,
seized the woman, by her mud-stained satin
He said: you come along with me, hastly
don't be slow...go..
A stream of obscenities poured hideously
out her gap-toothed mouth,
Fantine fell, leaning on her ellbow
Javert ordered a policeman to take her to the gaol
She was like a stem of tree cut off with a blunt Saw
