One Small Act Of Kindness Poem by Jim Yerman

One Small Act Of Kindness

I was reminded yesterday of the importance of kindness
even a kindness that may seem quite small.
Because no act of kindness, no matter how small,
can ever be too small at all!

It was an act of kindness friendly and kind, generous, gentle and sweet.
It occurred in the most ordinary of places….
in the middle of a quite busy street.

We were heading west in two lanes of traffic…
while two other lanes were heading east,
when up ahead in the lane to our right…
the traffic had inexplicably ceased..

The people who had stopped were waving their hands,
"Stop! Please Stop! " They all cried.
Because an old man in a wheelchair had rolled into the street
and was attempting a cross to the other side

We stopped as did the two lanes heading east…
but the wheelchair man seemed a bit lost
until one young man got out of his car,
ran over and helped push him across…

As we all cheered this small act of kindness
the sun seemed to shine a little brighter that day
and I know as I looked at the faces around me
we all felt a little better driving away.

And so once again I am reminded…

If we treated everyone we meet with such kindness
I say this most adamantly
our world would never again be the same…
and for that matter…neither would we.
