Mandelstam gives us sharp, precise image of a forest setting with minimal human presence, perhaps only the poet on a solitary walk. He gives us a paradox in the melody of silence the forest produces, like the 60's song SOUND OF SILENCE. In some mysterious way the poet can occupy the forest without disturbing its integrity. The poem does not intellectualize the How Can This Be True? issue. I won't even try to figure it out. Shakespeare has a character say to others: It is required you awake to wonder. The poets give us a miracle and we humbly accept it.
