Our Explanations Do Not Explain Us Poem by Dennis Ryan

Our Explanations Do Not Explain Us

Friday afternoon, July 29,2022

One's feelings in relationships are never equal,
whether when in love, loving one's friends,
or one's children. One feels more for the other,

or vice versa. But say these feelings for
the other are equal, almost equal at the start,
they change over time, for better or worse,

‘til death do us part. "Til death do us part—
yes, this is the problem. We feel complicated,
complex. Our explanations do not explain us.
