Jessica sits very still
in a spot that will soon
be Night, crossed by shadows,
immersed in a silence far
far greater than her own.
She accepts this silence
because all that must be said
was already spoken by all of us
this morning and early afternoon.
Further speech would only cloud
those words of sufficient light,
now dimming, flickering, soon to
vanish, just as they should.
I can just barely see you
approach this still spot, and
sit beside Jessica. There is
a pause in Night's passage.
Jessica's right hand clasps
your left hand, and both of you
tighten the grip. It becomes
the gesture of prayer: you are locked
in a single appeal for grace...
The darkness widens, as more light withdraws
into the sleep all of us needs. How can we
say, "Darkness has fallen, " without also
saying, "Light has risen over us? "
Daniel, I like this vignette in verse! The closing question is perfect and lifts the whole! Cool! The best to you, brother! -Glen
Thanks, Glen, I added the 2nd stanza some 4 hours after the 1st was completed. What happened in those hours? . I don't think I got smarter. A good angel intervened?
The darkness widens, as more light withdraws into the sleep all of us needs. How can we say, Darkness has fallen, without also saying, Light has risen over us?
Thatr's my favorite passage too, Bharati. I didnt think my way to it - it just came like a spiritual gift - That's the magic of poetry.
That's my favorite stanza too, Bhararti. It came to me in a flash, like a spiritual gift. It seems not everything we write comes from our minds, but from somewhere else. That's the magic of poetry.
This poem has not been translated into any other language yet.
I would like to translate this poem
Peace under darkness is something we all look for and the last stanza took this poem to a different level.10+++
