Tasveer
Ek bachi aadmi ka naksha kaagaz par banaati hai.
LakeeraiN lagaati hai, jo kuch karti hai
Magar har jagah safedi hi dikhlaaee deti hai.
Poora nahin kar paati jo vo jaanti hai.
Bay-sahaaray ki lakeeroN k beech vo jaanti hai
K zindgi gumi hui si lagti hai; ek pas-manzar ko
Doosri se vo alag kar deti hai. Bachi to aakhir bachi hi hai,
Vo apni maaN k paas jaati hai.
Aur maan, jahaan us ne lakeeroN k beech
khaali jagah choD dee thee, dil ka ek naksha kheench deti hai.

Portrait
Poem by Louise Gluck
A child draws the outline of a body.
She draws what she can, but it is white all through,
she cannot fill in what she knows is there.
Within the unsupported line, she knows
that life is missing; she has cut
one background from another. Like a child,
she turns to her mother.
And you draw the heart
against the emptiness she has created.
