Precious Poem by Dónall Dempsey

Precious

Rating: 5.0

You’ve fallen
asleep

like a leaf

come to rest
on a window sill

as if your body
were a shell

& your soul
elsewhere.

I sit
quietly by you
silent guardian of your body

until you return

from its dreamings

fold you in my arms

as if I were
a jewel box

that contained you.

“Love...love! ”
you murmur.

“Love...love! ”
I echo.

Holding all
of you again.

Precious.
Precious.

To hold that precious leaf safely until it is returned to itself...what an image, what a lovely view of love and all its aspects!

Tempting to say this poem is also 'precious' but it deserves more praise. You manage to employ simple words convey the most complex aspect of love. Thank you.
