Predator Poem by Theodora (Theo) Onken

Predator

Rating: 5.0

I was once a little girl of innocence
Always safe in the soft of mama's arms
Nothing and no one could ever hurt me
No one could ever do me harm;

Until that one day walking home from grade school...
I believe that i was in the 4th grade
When walking home - a huge man in a car followed me
Trying desperately to make me his prey;

He drove slowly - window down...
Asking if i wanted a ride...
Quick to answer i replied: 'no i live in the next house'
Of course that was a pure lie;

I walked up to it's door...
And he quickly disappeared
My heart was racing madly
And i was filled with fear;

It must have been 2 years later...
While riding the bus on Rainier Avenue
At a stop light i happened to look down
There he was again doing something nasty in plain naked view;

When i got home - i threw up...
Just could not get that image out of my mind...
For two years before he tried to lure me into his car
Today realizing: There before the grace of God walk i;

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
True story. Left Brighton Grade School and was walking the 6 blocks home i always walked...and on this day - a huge(really big and fat man) followed me for at least a block before he asked if i wanted a ride. i reacted quickly because my mother had literally made sure that i would never accept rides from strangers. That day left me weak and unnerved but i tried to put it behind me. About 2 years later, i was on a Seattle bus going home from somewhere and we were at a light on Rainier Avenue and i just happened to look down - there was the same man below next to the bus and my window involved in a devious act; To this day, i remember all of it...from the first time...walking home from school to the incident on the bus. My mother reported him, his description and model of car. Not sure if they caught up with him but i never saw him or his car ever again. Yes, even back in the day, there were sex offenders...maybe not as prevalent as they are today but they existed.

Every little girl should read this. A poem worth teaching at school, better than a text book. Sorry you had this very ugly experience. So good of you to try to use it for the good of others.
