Prophet Jonah Poem by Kostas Lagos

Prophet Jonah

How did I offend Yoy my God
so You sent me to foreigners
to preach about repentance!
On a ship of heathens I'll embark
to parts unknown I will travel!
What a fine plan did I conceive
what could go wrong?
No rough sea will stop me
nor a sea beast can swallow me

How did I offend you my God?
Three days in the belly of a beast
You left me there to live!
So let Your will be done
I will go to Nineveh!
To infidels and barbarians
the divine punishment I will foresee,
since the voice of my Lord sent me
the disaster will surely happen!

How did I offend you God?
Couldn't You keep
Your own word?
Fire and ash I foretold
a bright sun shining I see
How can I show up
and say I'm a prophet?
I will lay under this pumpkin plant
and find consolation in its shade

What a fool am I God?
How stupid I feel
I even held a grudge to You
I asked so many people
to perish in front of me
their cattle, their possessions
and I got angry You spared them
when I feel so sad for a pumpkin!
Such a prophet I am!
