Refrain Poem by Jolanta Gradowicz

Refrain

Can you hear the nagging refrain?
It comes from the depth of my heart
Where my hope found a good terrain
Where my longing and fear start.

Know I did my best to drown it out,
To annihilate it, or to forget,
But it comes back as an anguished shout
Full of terrible pain and regret.

It's like a mantra or a poor dream
Waiting for the final fulfillment,
Like variations on one theme
With tones which are clear and vibrant.

But perhaps you can't still hear it,
Or perhaps it will never reach you,
Or you'll take it as a joke or a wit
For this refrain seems to be so untrue.

So you may be utterly astonished
To hear the sincere confession;
The only truth that should be banished
To non-existence – its destination.
