Remember When... Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Remember When...

There are still many of us,
Old enough to remember when...
Holding political and religious leaders,
To the highest of esteem.
Allegations made of them being immoral,
Would have those making those accusations...
Burned immediately and not on stakes.

There are still many of us,
Old enough to remember when...
Lies to tell to sell to others told,
Was reason enough to be punished.
And scolded for being dishonest.
With a boldness to make Lucifer cold.
That was when people had integrity.

Today?
Integrity to have it is treated,
As if an incurable disease.
And pride to identify with dignity,
Will get someone shown disrespect.
Just for having the audacity,
To keep these feelings...
Exposed and shown regardless who accepts.

There are still many of us left,
Remembering times...
When evil was not easily found,
Under steeples of worship to find that common.
Or politicians who dress to impress to lie.
And people once conscious,
Did not fear to object.
To the nonsense those today seem to defend,
And expect.
Yes! Expect it!
With this done to then become offended,
By the ones who question...
If their doctors are quacks,
Who have them hooked on crack!

That would be the only explanation,
Why folks who seem and give the appearance...
Of not being out of their minds.
To have been medicated in a way to display,
A 'craze' to charade such convincing 'sanity'...
No one would suspect to detect,
A few screws loosened from their bolts.
That's how far advancements have achieved,
In distorting our perceptions.
